Diwali is the biggest travel season in India. Trains are full weeks in advance, flight fares jump, and millions of people head home with bags full of clothes, gifts, sweets and puja items. Packing for Diwali is different from packing for a normal holiday: you are carrying things for other people, often fragile ones, and you usually come back with more than you took.
This checklist covers everything, with special tips for keeping sweets intact, getting gifts through airport security, and avoiding excess baggage charges. Copy it to your phone or print it.

1. Documents and money
- Government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, passport or driving licence) — needed at airports and often checked on trains
- E-tickets / boarding passes saved offline (screenshots)
- Hotel or homestay bookings, if any
- Some cash in smaller notes for autos, porters and tips; UPI may not always work in crowded stations with weak networks
- A debit or credit card and a backup card kept in a different bag
- Emergency contact numbers written on paper
2. Clothes
- Festive outfits: kurta, saree, lehenga or sherwani for Diwali night and puja
- Matching footwear (pack in a shoe bag)
- 2–3 everyday outfits
- Comfortable travel clothes for the journey
- Light woollen layer or shawl — North Indian evenings can be cool in late October and November
- Nightwear and undergarments for each day plus one extra
- Cotton clothes for lighting diyas and bursting crackers (synthetic fabrics are more dangerous near flames)
Tip: pack festive outfits last, on top, folded in tissue paper or a garment bag to reduce creases.
3. Puja and festive items
- Small diyas or LED diyas if your family wants extras
- Puja thali items you have promised to bring
- Rangoli colours in sealed pouches (double-bag them; they stain everything)
- Decorations such as torans or fairy lights
Remember that firecrackers are not allowed in airline baggage, checked or cabin, and carrying them on trains is also prohibited. Buy locally where legally allowed.
4. Gifts and sweets
- Gifts wrapped after security if flying, or wrapped loosely, because security staff may need to open them
- Dry fruits in sealed boxes
- Sweets in airtight containers
Packing sweets safely: 1. Choose dry sweets (kaju katli, soan papdi, laddoos) for long journeys; milk-based sweets spoil quickly without a fridge. 2. Put boxes in a sealed plastic bag in case syrup leaks. 3. Pack them in the middle of a hard-shell bag, surrounded by clothes. 4. On flights, liquid and semi-liquid items (ghee, syrupy sweets like rasgulla) count as liquids in cabin bags and are limited to small containers; put them in checked baggage instead.
5. Toiletries and medicines
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo (travel sizes for cabin bags: 100 ml per container)
- Moisturiser and lip balm — Diwali season can be dry
- Burn cream and band-aids (diya and cracker season)
- Regular medicines in their original strips, plus prescriptions
- Masks for smoggy cities; air quality in parts of North India often drops sharply around Diwali
- Antacid tablets — a lot of festive food is coming
6. Electronics
- Phone and charger
- Power bank (must be in cabin baggage on flights, never checked)
- Earphones
- Extension board — homes get crowded with chargers during festivals
- Laptop only if you really must work
7. Train-specific extras
- Chain and padlock to secure bags under the berth
- Bedsheet or shawl (AC coaches provide linen, but extra is useful)
- Slippers for the journey
- Water bottle and dry snacks
- Wet wipes and hand sanitiser
- A small torch for night-time stations
8. Flight-specific extras
- Cabin bag within 7 kg and 115 cm total — see our cabin bag rules
- A personal item such as a laptop backpack (up to 3 kg on IndiGo)
- A foldable tote for the return journey with extra gifts
- A luggage scale to weigh bags at home
Which bags work best for Diwali trips?
For a 4–7 day trip home, most people need a medium check-in trolley plus a cabin bag or backpack. A hard shell protects sweets and gifts best; a soft bag with an expander is handy for the extra you bring back.

Frequently asked questions
Can I carry sweets on a flight? Dry sweets are generally fine in both cabin and checked baggage. Syrupy or liquid sweets are subject to cabin liquid limits, so pack them in checked bags.
Can I carry diyas or candles? Unlit diyas and candles are generally fine. Firecrackers, sparklers and flammable items are not allowed.
How do I avoid excess baggage charges? Weigh bags at home, buy extra allowance online in advance if needed, and leave space for the return trip.
Wishing you a safe journey and a very happy Diwali!
Packing for kids and elderly family members
Children: pack a separate small bag with a change of clothes, snacks, wipes, a favourite toy and any medicines, so you do not have to open the main bag during the journey. Cotton festive clothes are more comfortable and safer around diyas.
Elderly relatives: carry their medicines in your cabin bag with a written list of doses, plus their ID and a copy of prescriptions. A lightweight spinner trolley is easier for them to push than a two-wheel bag they have to tilt and pull. Request wheelchair assistance when booking flights if needed; it is free on Indian airlines.
Coming back: the return-trip plan
Most people come back from Diwali with more than they took: homemade snacks, pickles, new clothes and gifts. Plan for it:
- Leave 2–3 kg of spare allowance on the way out.
- Pack a foldable duffel inside your main bag.
- Put pickles and ghee in leak-proof jars, double-bagged, in checked luggage.
- If you will be well over the limit, pre-book extra baggage online; it is usually cheaper than paying at the counter.
